CHEMICAL OR PHYSICAL PROCESSES, e.g. CATALYSIS OR COLLOID CHEMISTRY; THEIR RELEVANT APPARATUS

Description

B01J encompasses chemical and physical processes conducted on a laboratory or industrial scale, with particular emphasis on catalytic and colloid chemistry applications. This subclass covers reactors, reaction vessels, and apparatus designed for mixing, heating, cooling, and controlling conditions during chemical transformations, as well as methods for catalysis, heterogeneous reactions, and colloidal systems. The classification includes solid-liquid separation techniques relevant to process chemistry, such as filtration and centrifugation when integrated with chemical processing. B01J excludes apparatus solely dedicated to distillation (B01D), biochemical processes in dedicated bioreactors (C12M), and metallurgical processes (C22).

Scope Notes

Glossary: catalyst catalysts any substance that increases the rate of a reaction without itself being consumed. Catalysts are commonly used in their pure form or in combination with suitable carriers. chromatography a process in which a fluid is caused to flow along a linear path comprising a sorbent, with which the fluid competes in affinity for a constituent of the fluid. The constituent is sorbed from the moving fluid by the relatively immobile sorbent and re-dissolved by a later passing portion of the fluid until an equilibrium of the sorbing-dissolving step is set up causing the constituent to concentrate in a specific volume of the sorbent and to move along the path of the fluid at a rate slower than such fluid. fluidised particles fluidised particle finely divided solid particles lifted and agitated by a stream of fluid fluidised-bed fluidised beds fluidised-solid contacting technique in which finely divided particles are lifted and agitated by a rising stream of fluid molecular sieve molecular sieves materials (e.g. zeolitic or mesoporous) having cavities and channels which by their size allow some molecules to pass through, but prevent others solid particles solid particle particles whether catalysts, reactants or inert in solid, semi-solid or pasty state sorbent sorbents a material which separates a constituent from a fluid mixture containing such constituents. The action in most instances is that of selective retention (i.e. the sorbent removes only the part of the fluid mixture for which it has the greatest affinity). zeolites zeolite (i) crystalline aluminosilicates with base-exchange and molecular sieve properties, having three-dimensional [3D], microporous lattice framework structure of tetrahedral oxide units; (ii) compounds isomorphous to those of the former category, wherein the aluminium or silicon atoms in the framework are partly or wholly replaced by atoms of other elements, e.g. gallium, germanium, phosphorus or boron. | Limiting references: Separation also combined with chemical reactions Generating specific gases , Catalysts used only in polymerisation reactions Pressure vessels for containing or storing compressed, liquefied or solidified gases | Application references: Treatment of milk General methods or apparatus for disinfection or sterilising of materials Use of solid sorbent compositions in liquid separation, e.g. ion-exchange adsorbents , Ion-exchange chromatography processes, , Use of filter aid compositions Auxiliary pretreatment of gases or vapours by ultrasound Separation of gases or vapours Use of sorbent compositions in gas separation , Separation of isotopes Electrodialysis, electro-osmosis Cleaning involving contact with liquid by sonic or ultrasonic vibrations Apparatus for compacting or sintering metal powders Granulating metals Making granules from plastics or from substances in a plastic state Active carbon Treatment of water by ion-exchange Packings, fillings or grids for biological treatment of water, waste water or sewage Processes for granulating fertilisers characterised by their chemical composition Granulating molten slag Chemical aspects of granulating macromolecular substances Use of substances as emulsifying, wetting, dispersing or foam producing agents Refining of hydrocarbon oils, in the absence of hydrogen, with solid sorbents Purification of sugar using ion-exchange materials Extraction of sugar from molasses using ion exchange Granulating ores or scrap Extraction of metal compounds from ores or concentrates by wet processes, e.g. adsorption or ion-exchange Physical treatment of fibres, threads, yarns or fabrics Pressure vessels in general Combustion apparatus in which combustion takes place in a fluidised bed of fuel or other particles Drying solid materials to form a fluidised bed Furnace, conducted in the presence of fluids and solid particles Rotary drum furnaces Blasting cartridges for producing gas under pressure Splashing boards or grids specially adapted for trickle coolers Using ion-exchange for investigating or analysing materials Pressure vessels for nuclear reactors Treating radioactively contaminated material
