B21B

ROLLING OF METAL (auxiliary operations used in connection with metal-working operations covered in B21, see B21C; bending by rolling B21D; manufacture of particular objects, e.g. screws, wheels, rings, barrels, balls, by rolling B21H; pressure welding by means of a rolling mill B23K20/04)

Description

B21B covers mechanical metal-working processes that reduce, shape, or flatten metal stock through rolling operations, without substantially removing material. This subclass encompasses hot rolling, cold rolling, and warm rolling of various metal forms including ingots, slabs, blooms, and finished products, as well as the associated machinery, rollers, roll stands, and control systems. Typical applications include production of sheets, plates, strips, bars, wire, and tubes through successive passes between rotating rolls. Related ancillary operations such as guide systems, cooling, lubrication, and straightening integrated into the rolling process are included, while B21C and subsequent B21 subclasses separately cover other deformation processes like drawing, forging, and stamping.
