C07C

ACYCLIC OR CARBOCYCLIC COMPOUNDS

Description

C07C covers the synthesis, preparation, and chemical composition of acyclic (open-chain) and carbocyclic organic compounds containing only carbon and hydrogen, or carbon, hydrogen, and non-metallic elements in their basic structure. This broad subclass encompasses hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, and related derivatives of aliphatic and cyclic carbon skeletons. The classification explicitly excludes heterocyclic compounds (which contain atoms other than carbon in the ring structure), which are covered separately in C07D, and naturally occurring or isolated compounds typically classified elsewhere by their specific function or source.

Filing statistics

CPC subclass C07C recorded 309,912 patent applications worldwide between 2013 and 2023. Annual filings grew from 24,406 in 2013 to 24,505 in 2023 (+0%), peaking at 31,531 applications in 2016. The most active applicants in class C07 are ROCHE (12,683 applications), NOVARTIS (10,775 applications) and CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (10,619 applications).
