B07C

POSTAL SORTING; SORTING INDIVIDUAL ARTICLES, OR BULK MATERIAL FIT TO BE SORTED PIECE-MEAL, e.g. BY PICKING (specially adapted for a specific purpose covered by another class, see the relevant place, e.g. A43D33/06, B23Q7/12)

Introduced: September 1968

Description

B07C covers mechanical and automated systems for sorting discrete items and bulk materials into predetermined categories or destinations. This subclass encompasses postal sorting machinery, parcel sorting equipment, and piece-by-piece sorting of articles such as letters, packages, or industrial components. Applications include conveyor-based sorting systems, robotic picking mechanisms, optical or mechanical identification systems used to direct items to appropriate bins or routes, and manual or semi-automated workstations for item classification. The classification excludes general solid-solid separation processes (covered in B07B) and focuses specifically on sorting individual articles or materials that can be economically processed unit-by-unit rather than in bulk.
