C06C

DETONATING OR PRIMING DEVICES; FUSES (ammunition fuzes F42C); CHEMICAL LIGHTERS; PYROPHORIC COMPOSITIONS

Introduced: September 1968

Description

C06C covers detonating and priming devices used to initiate explosive charges, including percussion caps, electric detonators, and non-electric initiators. This subclass also encompasses fuses (both safety and detonating types), chemical lighters that ignite through exothermic reactions, and pyrophoric compositions that spontaneously ignite upon contact with air or moisture. The classification includes the design, manufacture, and composition of these initiation and ignition devices, but excludes the explosives themselves (covered under C06B) and general matches or lighters outside the chemical/pyrophoric scope.

Glossary

Pyrophoric Pyrophoric (Greek, meaning fire-bearing) materials are finely divided chemical substances, mostly metals, which at room temperature vehemently react with the oxygen contained in air. The energy released in this oxidation process is sufficient to make substances glow or blaze. Therefore a pyrophoric material can spontaneously ignite in air.
