G02B

OPTICAL ELEMENTS, SYSTEMS OR APPARATUS

Introduced: September 1968

Description

G02B covers optical components, assemblies, and systems designed to control, direct, or modify light propagation. This subclass encompasses lenses, mirrors, prisms, diffractive elements, filters, polarizers, beam splitters, and optical coatings, as well as integrated optical systems such as microscopes, telescopes, and viewing devices. Also included are optical design principles, aberration correction methods, and auxiliary components like mounts and alignment mechanisms. Adjacent subclasses G02C and G02D address spectacles/contact lenses and optical measuring instruments respectively, while G02F covers electro-optical devices with active control of light properties.

Glossary

in broken contact such that the air-space between the constituents of an optical member has no optical influence. light applies to electromagnetic radiation not only in the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum which can be perceived by the human eye (i.e. visible) but also to ultraviolet or infrared radiation. optical optics applies not only to visible light but also to ultraviolet or infrared radiation. simple lens or prism simple lens simple lenses simple prism simple prisms simple single lens or prism compound lens or prism compound lens compound lenses compound prism compound prisms optical member the constituents of which are either close together without air-space or in broken contact; see also the Note after group . objective objectives lens or optical system designed to produce a real image of a real object. eyepiece eyepieces lens or optical system designed to produce a virtual image for viewing by the eye or by another optical system. front is determined by looking from the more distant conjugate. rear is determined by looking from the more distant conjugate.
