C01C AMMONIA; CYANOGEN; COMPOUNDS THEREOF
Introduced: September 1968
Classification Context
- Section:
- CHEMISTRY; METALLURGY
- Class:
- INORGANIC CHEMISTRY
- Subclass:
- AMMONIA; CYANOGEN; COMPOUNDS THEREOF
Description
C01C covers the production, purification, and chemical compounds of ammonia and cyanogen, along with their derivatives. This includes synthetic ammonia manufacture, ammonia recovery processes, and the preparation of cyanides, isocyanides, and related nitrogen-containing compounds. The subclass encompasses both industrial synthesis methods and laboratory-scale preparation techniques for ammonia and cyanogen-based products used in fertilizers, chemicals, and pharmaceutical synthesis.
Filing statistics
IPC subclass C01C recorded 13,640 patent applications worldwide between 2013 and 2023. Annual filings grew from 947 in 2013 to 1,854 in 2023 (+96%). The most active applicants in class C01 are CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (5,794 applications), SINOPEC (CHINA PETROCHEMICAL CORPORATION) (3,286 applications) and LG CHEM (2,689 applications).

Glossary
Direct bonding Requires a bond between two adjacent atoms. Inorganic compound inorganic compounds A compound devoid of a carbon atom and containing a non-metallic element or a compound containing a carbon atom, and satisfying one of the following criteria: the compound cannot have a carbon atom having direct bonding to another carbon atom; or the compound cannot have direct bonding between a carbon atom and a halogen or hydrogen atom; or the compound cannot have direct bonding between a carbon atom and a nitrogen atom by a single or double bond. The following are exceptions to the above and are to be considered as inorganic compounds: compounds consisting of only carbon atoms, (e.g. fullerenes), cyanogen, cyanogen halides, cyanamide, phosgene, thiophosgene, hydrocyanic acid, isocyanic acid, isothiocyanic acid, fulminic acid, unsubstituted carbamic acid, and salts of the previously mentioned acids and which contain the same limitations as to a carbon atom. Moiety A specific part of a molecule. Preparation Preparations Covers synthesis, purification, separation, stabilisation or use of additives, unless a separate place is provided in the classification scheme.
