C22C ALLOYS (flints C06C15/00; treatment of alloys C21D, C22F)
Introduced: September 1968
Description
C22C covers the composition, structure, and properties of alloys—metallic materials composed of two or more elements where at least one is a metal. This subclass includes ferrous alloys (iron-based), non-ferrous alloys (aluminum, copper, nickel, titanium, magnesium, zinc, and other metal bases), and their constituent phases and microstructures. The classification encompasses alloy design, alloying elements' effects on mechanical and physical properties, corrosion resistance, heat treatability, and technological specifications for industrial applications ranging from structural materials to precision components. Related processing methods and heat treatment are covered elsewhere in C22B-C22F.

Glossary
Alloy alloys A composition of plural elements at least one of which is a free metal. Also includes material containing any combination of fibres, filaments, whiskers and particles, e.g. carbides, diamond, oxides, borides, nitrides or silicides, or other metal compounds, e.g. oxynitrides or sulfides, embedded in a metallic matrix. Amorphous Possessing no regular crystalline arrangement of atoms. Cermet cermets Material containing any combination of fibres, filaments, whiskers, and particles, e.g. carbides, diamond, oxides, borides, nitrides, silicides, or other metal compounds, e.g. oxynitrides or sulfides, embedded in a metallic matrix. Master alloy master alloys A mixture or alloy of elements which are to be added to a charge or molten metal in order to provide a desired composition, deoxidize the molten metal or provide a fine grain size, etc. Refining Purification of metal by removal of impurities therefrom.
