TURNING; BORING

Introduced: September 1968

Classification Context

Section:
PERFORMING OPERATIONS; TRANSPORTING
Class:
MACHINE TOOLS; METAL-WORKING NOT OTHERWISE PROVIDED FOR
Subclass:
TURNING; BORING

Description

B23B covers machine tools and processes for turning and boring operations on workpieces, typically metals. This subclass includes lathes, boring machines, and related equipment designed to remove material through rotational cutting, as well as accessories, tool holders, and control systems integral to these operations. Turning operations produce cylindrical or tapered surfaces, while boring creates or enlarges holes; both may be performed on a single machine tool. Adjacent subclasses address other metal-working operations such as milling (B23C), grinding (B23D), and sawing (B23H).
