Description
C09F covers natural resins extracted from plants and trees, along with products derived from or used with oils for coating and finishing applications. This includes French polish (shellac-based finishes), drying oils (such as linseed or tung oil) that cure through oxidation, siccatives or drying agents that accelerate oil polymerization, and turpentine as a solvent and distillate product. The classification encompasses both the raw materials themselves and their preparation or treatment for use in paints, varnishes, and protective coatings, excluding synthetic resins and adhesives which are covered separately within C09.
Scope Notes
Glossary: Drying-oil drying-oils Unsaturated fatty oil, such as linseed oil, tung oil, poppy seed oil, perilla oil and walnut oil, that becomes hard, tough and elastic upon exposure to the air when spread into a thin film. French polishing Wood finishing technique for wooden furniture that results in a very high gloss, deep colour and tough surface; it consists of applying many thin coats of shellac using a rubbing pad. Natural resin Natural resins Water-insoluble mixtures of compounds derived from trees, especially conifers, e.g. gum, tall oil rosin, pine tar, pitch, shellac. Siccative siccatives Drying agent; a substance that promotes drying, e.g. linseed or flax seed oil. Turpentine Resinous exudate or extract obtained from coniferous trees, particularly those of the genus Pinus. Voltolising Subjecting oils to treatment with an electric discharge. | Limiting references: Vulcanised oils, e.g. factice Compositions of natural resins Polishing compositions Thickening of hydrocarbon oils or fatty oils by voltolising Chemical modification of oils
