NON-POSITIVE-DISPLACEMENT MACHINES OR ENGINES, e.g. STEAM TURBINES

Introduced: September 1968

Classification Context

Section:
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING; LIGHTING; HEATING; WEAPONS; BLASTING
Class:
MACHINES OR ENGINES IN GENERAL; ENGINE PLANTS IN GENERAL; STEAM ENGINES
Subclass:
NON-POSITIVE-DISPLACEMENT MACHINES OR ENGINES, e.g. STEAM TURBINES

Description

F01D covers non-positive-displacement turbomachines, primarily steam turbines and gas turbines, where fluid flow through rotating blades generates mechanical power without requiring positive displacement. This classification encompasses the design, construction, and operation of reaction and impulse turbines, including blade configurations, rotor assemblies, casing arrangements, and control systems. It applies to both stationary industrial turbines and mobile applications, but excludes positive-displacement engines (such as reciprocating engines covered under F01B) and compressors or pumps (classified separately in other sections).
