F01B

MACHINES OR ENGINES, IN GENERAL OR OF POSITIVE-DISPLACEMENT TYPE, e.g. STEAM ENGINES (of rotary-piston or oscillating-piston type F01C; of non-positive-displacement type F01D; internal-combustion engines F02B; combustion-product engine plants F02G; machines or engines, other than of positive-displacement type, for liquids F03B; positive-displacement engines driven by liquids F03C; wind motors F03D; positive-displacement machines for liquids F04B; rotary-piston, or oscillating-piston, positive-displacement machines for liquids F04C)

Introduced: September 1968

Description

F01B encompasses machines and engines operating on positive-displacement principles, where a fixed volume of fluid is trapped and displaced in each cycle to produce work. This subclass covers steam engines, reciprocating engines, rotary positive-displacement machines, and other mechanisms where displacement is the primary operating characteristic. The classification includes piston engines, rotary vane machines, screw compressors operating in reverse as expanders, and similar devices that rely on mechanical displacement rather than dynamic pressure principles. F01B excludes dynamic machines (turbines, centrifugal compressors) and internal combustion engines with spark or compression ignition, which are classified elsewhere.
