MACHINES OR ENGINES, IN GENERAL OR OF POSITIVE-DISPLACEMENT TYPE, e.g. STEAM ENGINES

Introduced: September 1968

Classification Context

Section:
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING; LIGHTING; HEATING; WEAPONS; BLASTING
Class:
MACHINES OR ENGINES IN GENERAL; ENGINE PLANTS IN GENERAL; STEAM ENGINES
Subclass:
MACHINES OR ENGINES, IN GENERAL OR OF POSITIVE-DISPLACEMENT TYPE, e.g. STEAM ENGINES

Description

F01B encompasses machines and engines operating on positive-displacement principles, where a fixed volume of fluid is trapped and displaced in each cycle to produce work. This subclass covers steam engines, reciprocating engines, rotary positive-displacement machines, and other mechanisms where displacement is the primary operating characteristic. The classification includes piston engines, rotary vane machines, screw compressors operating in reverse as expanders, and similar devices that rely on mechanical displacement rather than dynamic pressure principles. F01B excludes dynamic machines (turbines, centrifugal compressors) and internal combustion engines with spark or compression ignition, which are classified elsewhere.

Scope Notes
