Subclass:
PROCESSES, APPARATUS OR SELECTION OF SUBSTANCES FOR IMPREGNATING, STAINING, DYEING OR BLEACHING OF WOOD, OR FOR TREATING OF WOOD WITH PERMEANT LIQUIDS, NOT OTHERWISE PROVIDED FOR; CHEMICAL OR PHYSICAL TREATMENT OF CORK, CANE, REED, STRAW OR SIMILAR MATERIALS

Description

B27K covers processes, apparatus, and chemical or physical treatment substances for impregnating, staining, dyeing, or bleaching wood and related fibrous materials (cork, cane, reed, straw). This includes methods and equipment for applying permeant liquids to wood that are not covered by more specific subclasses, such as preservative treatments, colorization processes, and surface modifications using chemical or physical means. The classification encompasses both the treatment procedures and the selection or formulation of substances used in these operations, excluding treatments already classified under dedicated preservation or specialized wood-working processes.

Glossary

Wood Natural whole wood, or wood-based products other than those made from fibres, for example plywood or laminated veneer lumber. Impregnating Incorporating a substance into the pores of a material by absorption, adsorption or penetration, for example by soaking the material in the substance or by treating the material with the substance under pressure. Impregnating can for example be done in order to protect a material against destructive outside influences, such as fungal decay, pests or water. Staining Treating a surface with a paint that is formulated to transport the pigment into the pores of the surface, rather than creating a film on top of the surface. Dyeing Treating a material with a soluble colouring substance that has an affinity to the material to which it is applied (as opposed to colouring with a pigment, which is usually insoluble). Dampening Treating wood, for example with steam, in order to increase its water content.
