INFORMATION STORAGE BASED ON RELATIVE MOVEMENT BETWEEN RECORD CARRIER AND TRANSDUCER

Introduced: September 1968

Classification Context

Section:
PHYSICS
Class:
INFORMATION STORAGE
Subclass:
INFORMATION STORAGE BASED ON RELATIVE MOVEMENT BETWEEN RECORD CARRIER AND TRANSDUCER

Description

G11B covers magnetic, optical, and mechanical information storage systems where data is recorded on and read from a carrier medium through relative motion between the medium and a transducer. This includes magnetic tape recorders, cassettes, reels, cartridges, and disk drives; optical disks such as CDs and DVDs; and mechanical storage devices utilizing grooves or similar features. The classification encompasses the physical media, transport mechanisms, read/write heads, and playback apparatus, but excludes static storage methods covered by G11C (semiconductor memory) and purely optical recording without transducer movement.

Scope Notes

Glossary: record carrier Record carriers means a body, such as a cylinder, disc, card, tape, or wire, capable of permanently holding information, which can be read-off by a sensing element movable relatively to the record carrier head heads includes any means for converting sinusoidal or non-sinusoidal electric wave-forms into variations of the physical condition of at least the adjacent surface of the record carrier, or vice versa near-field interaction near-field interactions means a very short distance interaction using scanning-probe techniques, e.g. quasi- contact or evanescent contact between head and record carrier | Limiting references: Recording measured values in a way that does not require playback through a transducer Recording or playback apparatus using mechanically marked tape, e.g. punched paper tape, or using unit records, e.g. punched or magnetically marked cards Transferring data from one type of record carrier to another type of record carrier Guiding cards or sheets Record carriers for use with machines and with at least a part designed to carry digital markings Details of scanning-probe apparatus Circuits for coupling output of reproducer to radio receiver Loudspeakers, microphones, gramophone pick-ups or like acoustic electromechanical transducers or circuits therefor | Application references: Associated working of cameras or projectors with sound-recording or -reproducing means Substation equipment for recording telephonic conversations or messages for absent subscribers Television signal recording ,
