G11B

INFORMATION STORAGE BASED ON RELATIVE MOVEMENT BETWEEN RECORD CARRIER AND TRANSDUCER (recording measured values in a way that does not require playback through a transducer G01D9/00; recording or playback apparatus using mechanically marked tape, e.g. punched paper tape, or using unit records, e.g. punched or magnetically marked cards G06K; transferring data from one type of record carrier to another G06K1/18; circuits for coupling output of reproducer to radio receiver H04B1/20; gramophone pick-ups or like acoustic electromechanical transducers or circuits therefor H04R)

Introduced: September 1968

Description

G11B covers magnetic, optical, and mechanical information storage systems where data is recorded on and read from a carrier medium through relative motion between the medium and a transducer. This includes magnetic tape recorders, cassettes, reels, cartridges, and disk drives; optical disks such as CDs and DVDs; and mechanical storage devices utilizing grooves or similar features. The classification encompasses the physical media, transport mechanisms, read/write heads, and playback apparatus, but excludes static storage methods covered by G11C (semiconductor memory) and purely optical recording without transducer movement.

Title

Titles differ between systems:

IPC: INFORMATION STORAGE BASED ON RELATIVE MOVEMENT BETWEEN RECORD CARRIER AND TRANSDUCER

CPC: INFORMATION STORAGE BASED ON RELATIVE MOVEMENT BETWEEN RECORD CARRIER AND TRANSDUCER (recording measured values in a way that does not require playback through a transducer G01D9/00; recording or playback apparatus using mechanically marked tape, e.g. punched paper tape, or using unit records, e.g. punched or magnetically marked cards G06K; transferring data from one type of record carrier to another G06K1/18; circuits for coupling output of reproducer to radio receiver H04B1/20; gramophone pick-ups or like acoustic electromechanical transducers or circuits therefor H04R)

Of 18 combined children, 16 exist in both systems.

2 codes are CPC-only extensions.

Note: 2 CPC extensions are marked as secondary classification only.

9 shared codes have differing titles between IPC and CPC.
